Introduction

A two- or four-door enclosed car body that seats four or more people on two full-width seats. The term “sedan” was originally used as a name for a vehicle body in 1912. The sedan chair, a one-person enclosed box with windows and carried by porters, was a 17th-century evolution of a litter.

Close-coupled sedans, club sedans, convertible sedans, fastback sedans, hardtop sedans, notchback sedans, and sedanet/sedanette are all variations of the sedan body type.

Characteristics

The typical characteristics of sedans include:

  • A roof-supporting B-pillar (between the front and rear windows). There are two rows of chairs.
  • A three-box design with the engine in front and the luggage compartment in back
  • A roofline that is less sharply sloped than a coupé, resulting in more headroom for back passengers and a less sporty look.
  • A minimum rear interior volume of 33 cu ft (0.93 m3)

Types

We frequently use some fundamental characteristics to define sedans such as equipment, pricing, design and size. When it comes to performance, it’s critical to examine the number of cylinders and the engine’s output. Equipment is one of the above mentioned criteria, heavily influenced by market variations. This element is also used to distinguish between the ordinary and luxury automobile categories. For example, higher-end vehicles are constantly lavished with high quality materials and a slew of modern cockpit amenities, resulting in a significant price difference.

Regardless of the many labels used by different car markets, sedans are divided into six categories.

  • Subcompact Sedan – these have 5 door hatchback versions and the Toyota Yaris, Toyota Vios Ford Fiesta are included in these
  • Compact Sedan – are typically between 4,250 and 4,500 mm long and have a 1.4- to 2.5-liter engine capacity. Examples include Corolla Altis, Ford Focus, KIA Forte Etc
  • Large family/Mid-size Sedan – cars are generally 4700-4900 mm length and have 6-cylinder engines with a displacement of 2.0-3.5 litres. Examples include Toyota Camry, Honda Accord
  • Full-Size Sedan – they are longer than 4900mm and have an extremely spacious cabin. Examples: Toyota Avalon, Ford Crown Victoria etc
  • Executive/Mid-luxury Sedan – These cars are also over 4,900 mm long, although they have a 2.5-5 liter and 6-8 cylinder engine. All of the equipment in the automobile are luxurious. The right-hand rear seats, in particular, are designed to give the most pleasant experience for passengers. Examples Jaguar XF, Audi A6, Mercedes Benz E-class etc
  • Full size/Grand Sedans – The phrase is most commonly associated with the largest inexpensive saloon in the North American automotive market. The grand sedans, which have a length of exceeding 5000 mm are powered by engines with a displacement of more 4 liters and 6-12 cylinders. BMW 7 series, Lexus LS and Audi 8 fall into this category.
